The UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY Institute for Environment and Human Environment (UNUEHS) in Bonn has been conceived and created to assess the vulnerability and coping capacity of
societies facing natural and human-induced hazards in a changing environment. Generating policy
relevant knowledge and engaging in innovative human capacity building are core tasks emanating
from this mandate. In this capacity, UNU-EHS is one of 18 partners based in Germany and Vietnam
implementing the WISDOM (Water-related Information System for the sustainable Development of the

UNU-EHS invites applications of young scientists, particularly interested and educated in the fields ofsocial or natural sciences, engineering, geography or planning (m/f) for the following position:
Junior Researcher $-1òó Reference 2007/03/UNU-EHS
This position belongs to the UNU-EHS Section on Vulnerability Assessment and the successful
applicant will work in close collaboration with the Head of this section. The applicant is expected to
participate in management activities with respect to one of UNU-EHSòù activities within the project:
vulnerability assessment and examination of coping and adaptation strategies to sudden-onset and
creeping environmental changes in the Lower Mekong, Vietnam.
In addition, the successful candidate will assist the supervision and guidance of two PhD students one
working on vulnerability to sudden onset hazards such as floods, with a special focus on socioeconomic aspects, the other working on vulnerability assessment to creeping environmental changes
such as drought and sea level rise. The Junior Researcher will develop and conduct his/her ownresearch in the field of developing quantitative and qualitative methods and tools to capture different
dimensions of vulnerability of local communities to environmental changes and hazards (including
seeking additional third-party funding). Demonstrated skills in developing methods and indicators to
assess vulnerability, coping and adaptive capacity of local communities to natural hazards and
environmental change give a clear advantage. Also working experience in developing countries,
particularly in Vietnam and experiences with SPSS and GIS will be added advantage. Knowledge of
Vietnamese is not required, however it can be an advantage as well.
The successful candidates will be based at UNU-EHS in Bonn and will be expected to travel to
Vietnam once or twice a year for periods not exceeding one month. The position is open to applicantsholding a PhD degree in the relevant research field or holding an MSc degree with substantial,
relevant post-qualification work experience.

Contracts for 1-2 years, with the possibility of renewal, will be offered in the Personnel Service
Agreement (PSA) category of UNU-EHS. Remuneration for this post will be ôÌ24,000 -ôÌ34,800 perannum depending on qualifications and experience. This income is free from taxation in Germany.
