Several opportunities for Master$-1òùs (Diplom) and Ph.D. (Doktorarbeit) projects are being offered. The projects will focus on the investigation of the electronic structure of molecular contacts between semiconducting polymers and inorganic electrode materials, and on thin film deposition of bio-and nano-molecular materials. Such interfaces and thin films are for example important for òüplastic electronicsòý (organic solar cells or light emitting diodes), or applications in bio-sensing. Successful applicants will perform experiments using analytical techniques such as photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) or atomic force microscopy (AFM), and preparative techniques for thin films based on spraying and ink jet printing. The objectives of these projects span from gaining an understanding of the electronic structure of molecular contacts to the development of commercially viable production techniques for patterned thin films of macro-molecular materials.
Applicants should pursue engineering or natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology...) degrees. Applications can be in English or German. Successful applicants will be supported by the Surface Science Lab when establishing residence in the Tampa area upon arrival. Appartments in close proximity to the university are usually available on short notice. Living costs are similar or somewhat less than in Germany. The Tampa bay area offers numerous opportunities for recreational activities. Some of our beaches are world famous and a popular tourist destination.
