The International Research Training Group $-1òþModeling Material Flows and Production Systems for Sustainable Resource Use in Intensified Crop Production in the North China Plainòý, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, is seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for 8 PhD scholarships starting June 1st, 2007 for 2 years with an option for a third year, subject to prolongation of funding by DFG. The PhD grant amounts to 1,103 ôÌ net per month (+ allowances for family and stays in Beijing).
The interdisciplinary research and education program is jointly conducted with China Agricultural University, Beijing. It comprises subprojects in Soil Science (K. Stahr), Plant Nutrition (T. Müller), Plant Ecology (A. Fangmeier), Biogeophysics (T. Streck), Spectroscopy (U. Haas), Crop Science (W. Claupein), Plant Breeding (A.M. Melchinger), Farm Management (J. Zeddies), Computer Applications in Agriculture (R. Doluschitz) and Rural Development Theory and Policy (M. Zeller). Analysis and sustainable improvement of cropping systems in the North China Plain are the main objectives of the research. The accompanying study program focuses on modeling of agricultural systems.
Successful applicants will work on one of the following research topics:
-Carbon storage in soils of the North China Plain
-Managing soil organic matter: long term field trials and modeling studies
-Regionalization of N-deposition
-Novel device for measurement of trace gases
-Assessment of nitrification- und denitfrification rates by means of stable isotope techniques
-Optimizing management practices (water, N, crops, rotation, sequence) in cropping systems
-Economic evaluation of farm level development strategies
-Agrarian change and rural development policy
Applicants must have an above-average Master$-1òùs degree or equivalent in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences or Agricultural Economics. The willingness, both to do interdisciplinary research in China (including research stays of up to several months) and to actively participate in the IRTG activities, is a prerequisite for the application. Candidates should not be older than 28 years and are expected to take up their residence in Stuttgart or the vicinity.
