Beschreibung : The CDTR at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, has an opening for a 3 year PhD studentship to perform research on AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) reliability. This project provides the unique opportunity to work with state-of-the art AlGaN/GaN HEMT devices from leading universities and companies around the world, including from the University California Santa Barbara / USA, UMS / Germany and others, employing and developing further leading techniques developed in the CDTR for device reliability analysis and research. AlGaN/GaN HEMTs are currently being developed for high power high speed applications in communication and radar applications. Although performance of these devices is already at an amazing level, reliability is still lacking. This research project focuses on understanding degradation mechanisms in AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, i.e., device reliability, using unique optical and electrical techniques developed in the CDTR, as well as to developing and applying new technologies.
The CDTR in Bristol, headed by Prof. Kuball, is the leading European Center for device reliability research, developing and applying unique device analysis techniques, such as Raman thermography for sub-micron and nano-second thermal and stress analysis of semiconductor devices, and many others. It presently comprises of 6 post-docs and research fellows, and 6 PhD students. Its research is funded by the UK research agency EPSRC, by the European Community FP7 programme, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Office of Naval Research / USA and by various European and US companies. More information on the CDTR can be found at http://spectra.phy.bris.ac.uk.
A Masters / Diploma or similar degree in Physics, Material Science or Electrical Engineering, and preferably background either in electrical and/or optical analysis of materials or devices. The research performed is expected to lead to a PhD degree at the end of this position. The position would cover living expenses, and PhD student fees. To apply please send a CV, including a description of research projects undertaken, transcripts of marks obtained, and names of two references to Prof. Kuball at Martin.Kuball@bristol.ac.uk.
